Atomic Coffee Roasters
In 1992 the Atomic Café opened in Ponsonby, Auckland and quickly became synonymous with exceptional coffee, with some customers choosing to travel across the city for the unique Atomic experience.
Then, in 1996, the iconic café expanded its operation to include a wholesale division, Atomic Coffee Roasters, which now produces freshly roasted coffee product for all of its stores and customers throughout New Zealand. While initially using a hand labelling technique for bagging and distribution, as demand grew, Atomic Coffee Roasters began to seek a more efficient solution to this time consuming process. After examining several options, Atomic Coffee Roasters selected Sato as their label solutions provider.
The old way Upon receipt of an order, batches of coffee would be roasted and prepared for dispatch. Atomic Coffee Roasters adheres to strict roasting, packaging and distribution methods to ensure maximum freshness requiring all bags to contain information including the bean variety, grind type and date on which the coffee was packed. This was completed using separate hand stamps that contained up to four coffee roasts, three blends and a date stamp.
The Sato solution Sato identified that accuracy of information was imperative to the success and reputation of the business. Key to this is ensuring the product is at its freshest when shipped. Sato proposed that the solution be automated and would include a thermal label printer and label software package.
Once the package was installed the labels were designed, incorporating the Atomic logo on each label. A variable database was also designed, which gave staff a simple and effective way of producing labels. Firstly, the operator would select the coffee blend from a drop down selection box, followed by the blend type and finally the amount of labels required for production would be chosen.
A date stamp would then be automatically added and within a few minutes a quantity of labels would be available to staff.
The result For the team at Atomic Coffee Roasters the benefits from automation of the labelling process are twofold. Firstly, introducing the Sato labelling system has saved staff a great deal of time, allowing them to concentrate on other tasks. Secondly, and perhaps most importantly, the entire distribution process has been streamlined, with a notable increase in accuracy and efficiency.
And, for a company that prides itself on being innovative and remaining ahead of the latest industry trends, Atomic Coffee Roasters have quickly realised their vision of producing and distributing outstanding coffee nationwide while maintaining their reputation for freshness and superior taste.
Harry Gosselman, general manager of Atomic Coffee Roasters comments: “The introduction of the Sato labelling system has enabled us to standardise our labels resulting in a very professional look for all of our wholesale products. It has also meant a much more efficient distribution process, which is very important for the rapidly growing wholesale area of our business.”
